8BitDo is adding to its lineup of gaming peripherals inspired by the original Xbox’s popular transparent green special-edition next month. The Jade Edition of the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode Controller is officially licensed by Xbox and is available to preorder for $70 ahead of its May 15 release. The premium controller will join the matching Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard and Retro R8 Wireless Mouse, both of which launched in January.
The 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode Controller originally launched in white and black models last spring. While it has the same core feature set as the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4GHz and 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth (Switch), it’s important to note that the 3-Mode model has a peculiar quirk. It’s the only 8BitDo Ultimate Controller with an Xbox button, but it only offers a wired connection on Xbox consoles. The other two modes that create the “3-Mode” moniker are wireless: It can sync wirelessly via a 2.4GHz USB dongle on PC and supports Bluetooth on iOS, Android, Mac, and Apple TV.
Check out a list of core features and customization options below. If the 3-Mode is of interest, you should know that the black and white editions are steeply discounted at Amazon right now:

The new transparent green 8BitDo Ultimate might be the best-looking Ultimate Controller yet, but PC, Mac, and Android players will want to consider the new 8BitDo Ultimate 2 instead. Released in February, the Ultimate 2 has upgraded TMR electromagnetic analog sticks, four remappable buttons– two back triggers, two shoulder bumpers–RGB lighting rings, and a USB-C dongle for 2.4GHz Wireless. Plus, it’s $10 less than the upcoming 3-Mode Jade Edition.

That said, the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode Controller is an excellent gamepad in its own right, and the Jade Edition should pair well with 8BitDo’s Xbox-inspired keyboard and mouse. It is a bit disappointing that the charging dock doesn’t match the Jade controller, as it’s the first model in the Ultimate series with a mismatched dock.
The Retro R8 Wireless Mouse, on the other hand, does include a transparent green magnetic charging dock. If you’re in the market for a budget wireless mouse with a robust feature set, we’d recommend checking it out for $60.
The Retro 87 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard is every bit as good as 8BitDo’s other retro gaming-inspired keyboards. It’s slightly more expensive at $120–though you can get it for $112.79 at Amazon right now–but it looks and feels great and includes a pair of detachable Super Buttons (giant buttons with microswitches). The mouse and keyboard offer wireless connections on PC, Mac, and Android via 2.4GHz and Bluetooth. You can customize your experience using 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2–the 3-Mode Controller uses the original Ultimate Software.
Heads up: Unlike the upcoming 3-Mode Controller, the keyboard and mouse are not compatible with Xbox consoles.
